Authors: Mrnjavac, Edna; Zenzerovic, Zdenka
Abstract: The paper demonstrates application of the queuing theory in modelling a port container terminal As a port container terminal is a complex system, it is possible to achieve operational efficiency of the terminal through coordination of particular subsystem capacities, Le determination of optimal terminal capacity accommodation. A port container terminal can be considered as a queuing system defined with basic parameters: the ship or container arrival rate and the ship or container service rate, in an observed time unit. Appropriate indices of port container terminal operations are computed on the basis of these parameters. A model of total ship waiting and berth unoccupancy costs has been established through the introduction of costs as optimization criteria thus facilitating decision-making on optimal capacity of a port container terminal.

Authors: Robinson, Mark; Stead, Bryan
Abstract: The BESTUFS Thematic Network is presented. The role of the Thematic Network in disseminating best practice in urban freight distribution is described and is its role in promoting trans-European collaboration. The objectives of BESTUFS are described and these are positioned against the European urban freight distribution problems that have been identified. The future for best practice in urban freight distribution is predicted and the goals of BESTUFS explained.

Authors: Gregori, Tullio
Abstract: In this paper is a simple Johansen approach to multiregional economic modeling addressed. We reformulate a partial equilibrium model to analyze traffic and trade changes in a interregional economy due to exogenous shocks in transportation costs. A biregional model about Friuli-Venezia Giulia and the Rest of the Country is used to numerically assess the effects on prices, output and imports of hypothetical reductions in transportation costs between these regions. Since prices play an important role to determine new equilibrium, we derive input/output elasticities and introduce a graph theory approach to decompose propagation mechanisms in nominal and real quantities.

Authors: Chang, Shaw-Ching; Ho, Chi-Hong
Abstract: Deduction may be wrong if we miss the part of human perception. In this paper we design a field experiment to measure the driver's perceptual car width. That car is standing still in front of that driver inside a vehicle cab. We deduce our perceptual car following model based on the results above and also show its connection with the GM's car following model The model we present here is not very like the one based on the general driver's perceptual model. Additionally we establish a car-following simulation model based on our findings. The simulation performances are interpreted in terms of car following stability, shock wave phenomena, and some macroscopic traffic parameters.
