    <title>Prepivoting composite score statistics</title>

    <description>Title: Prepivoting composite score statistics
Authors: Lunardon, Nicola
Abstract: The role played by the composite analogue of the log likelihood ratio in hypothesis testing and in setting confidence regions is not as prominent as it is in the canonical likelihood setting, since its asymptotic distribution depends on the unknown parameter. Approximate pivots based on the composite log likelihood ratio can be derived by using asymptotic arguments. However, the actual distribution of such pivots may differ considerably from the asymptotic reference, leading to tests and confidence regions whose levels are distant from the nominal ones. The use of bootstrap rather than asymptotic distributions in the composite likelihood framework is explored. Prepivoted tests and confidence sets based on a suitable statistic turn out to be accurate and computationally appealing inferential tools.

    <title>Il ruolo degli incentivi economici nell'istruzione universitaria</title>

    <description>Title: Il ruolo degli incentivi economici nell'istruzione universitaria
Authors: Graziosi, Grazia
Abstract: The aim of this work is to investigate whether the Italian University grants are an effective tool to prevent student dropout and to favor the degree attainment within academic path both for merit and need-based financial aids. The survey units are Italian students enrolled on a degree course in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics from 2002/03 until 2007/08 in the University of Trieste. On the one hand, the  Erdisu (Local Governmental Agency) offers some grants every year to eligible students from low-income families (scarcely related to the merit). The main objective of this intervention is to give equal opportunity to achieve higher education to motivated students irrespective of their income. On the other hand, Fonda Foundation offer some (only) merit-based grants to students enrolled in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics degree courses. The goal is to award the best students enrolled in the above courses. In order to estimate the causal effect of receiving a grant, we follow the literature on counterfactual analysis and we match treated and control units using Genetic matching and Coarsened Exact Matching.&#xD;
The results suggest that the need-based financial aids have positive impact to prevent drop-out at2nd year, but non significant effect on graduation time, whereas the merit-based scholarships increase the probability to achieve the degree on time.

    <title>Wages and International Factors’ mobility</title>

    <description>Title: Wages and International Factors’ mobility
Authors: Podrecca, Elena; Rossini, Gianpaolo
Abstract: The labor wage is the result of market variables and institutional settings of a country. In an&#xD;
open economy the determination of the market wage rate may be further affected by the&#xD;
extent of international mobility of both factors of production, labor and capital. Labor&#xD;
mobility is represented by migration in and out of a country, while capital mobility relates&#xD;
mostly to the extent of foreign direct investment (FDI) outflows and inflows. Migrants may&#xD;
represent an addition to the native labor force of a country and, in some cases, play a&#xD;
substitute role with respect to incumbent workers. FDI, in particular of the greenfield&#xD;
category, represents either a supplement to or a reduction of the domestic capital and, by and&#xD;
large, changes the opportunity set of a firm’s CEO with respect to the corresponding&#xD;
company operating in a closed economy. International factor mobility and domestic market&#xD;
variables, such as unemployment and productivity, interact in the wage setting process. In&#xD;
this paper, we derive a theoretical wage equation following the above premises, and perform&#xD;
pooled mean group estimates of its parameters on panel data for a group of 13 European&#xD;
countries with quarterly time observation over the period 1996-2007. We find that capital&#xD;
outflows have a robust negative effect on the wage rate. The effects of migration inflows,&#xD;
on the other hand, are not so clear-cut, as they can be null or negative depending on the&#xD;
sample of countries considered.

    <description>Title: L'effetto 'country of origin' sull'intenzione d'acquisto del consumatore: un'analisi metodologica
Authors: De Luca, Patrizia; Marzano, Fabio Claudio
Abstract: This study investigates, from the methodological perspective, how research on the influence of the country of origin effect has been conducted. To this end, the study reviews main published literature of the last five years, categorizing the documents according to various&#xD;
methodological issues. The growing use of the multi cue approach and the prevalent use of quantitative methods, even if based on non-probability sampling, are observed. Further, limits on the analyzed researches are pointed out. Results allow some suggestions to fill the research gaps,from the methodological point of view, and implications for future research.
