Abstract: The paper provides a review of freight transport demand models for applications in urban and metropolitan areas. The perspective adopted is the short-term one of public decision-makers involved in transport planning and traffic management.&#xD;
The paper recalls the general methodology to be used for assessing the city logistics scenario and the features of models in relation to the planning horizons: strategic, tactical and operative. The focus is on the transport demand models able to support the assessment of short-term policies/measures. Several models and methods have been proposed. They usually refer to the multi-stage modelling approach and can be classified in terms of reference unit: truck/vehicle, commodity/quantity, delivery and mixed. The paper offers an analysis of pros and cons of each above classes of models. The research prospects are also identified.

Abstract: The paper analyses a crucial problem in the international freight management and assesses the application of an innovative solution based on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools. In order to improve the customs clearance procedures, the paper analyses the main anomalies and bottlenecks related to international freight management of a case study by modelling the customs clearance activities in the Unified Modelling Language framework. Moreover, some novel ICT based solutions are proposed in order to optimize suited performance indices. The flow of goods and information involved in the case study is simulated in different scenarios in order to highlight the improvements reached by using ICT solutions. The simulation results point out the huge impact of ICT on customs clearance operations.

Abstract: The present paper deals with the problem of locating hubs for freight mobility in urban and suburban areas. In particular, we present a heuristic method that combines aspects coming from both classical simple plant location problems and shortest path ones on multimodal graphs. In the first phase of the proposed heuristics, we identify those nodes that could be attractive poles for being logistics platforms. In this phase we select the possible modal change nodes by analysing their communication capabilities with the other nodes of the network, such as depots, transit points, retail points, main accesses to the highways and railways. In the second phase, we first compute shortest mono-modal paths looking for well performing modal change nodes from both the required origin and destination nodes. Then, we evaluate the generalized cost of the corresponding possible multimodal path visiting the previously selected commuting points thus being able to identify the best location for the required hubs in the whole logistic network among the set of candidate nodes.&#xD;
Computational experiences and results concerning the logistic network of the metropolitan area of the city of Genoa are reported.

Abstract: The potential and critical aspects of any transport service can be highlighted through the estimation of appropriate performance indicators of the examined system. Commonly, container terminal analysis is based first on the evaluation and comparison of quantitative parameters that describe the level of service of the terminal and, on the other side by means of performance indicators related to terminal productivity. In this paper a Fuzzy Inference System for evaluation of a synthetic performance indicator is proposed. This tool could help planners and managers in terminals performances analysis and ranking as well as in assessing the effects of possible intervention on the systems. The proposed approach is suitable in the case of hub container ports. In fact this system is characterised by significant uncertainties and it is not always governed by certain rules, rational behaviour, so that it cannot be easily represented by traditional mathematical techniques and models. In our opinion, could be convenient to define the values of the considered parameters by explicitly define them in an approximate way, that is to say by fuzzy sets.
