Abstract: This paper outlines the EU regulatory framework and analyses current practice in four European&#xD;
countries in respect of public procurement and tendering of ferry services. Tender management for major&#xD;
ferry services resides with national government agencies, while tenders for smaller volume regional&#xD;
and/or inter-isles services are generally managed by local authorities and/or regional transport authorities.&#xD;
Operator selection criteria increasingly emphasises service quality aspects, and environmental impacts, as&#xD;
well as price (i.e. amount of subsidy required). There is a continued trend towards privately-owned&#xD;
operators providing and investing in essential ferry services, with an increasing role played by larger&#xD;
international integrated transport organisations. For transport authorities, ferry service procurement&#xD;
involves a continuous evolutionary process of specifying, offering, selecting, monitoring and reviewing&#xD;
services supplied. Based on the information collected and analysed, the authors have developed a ‘tender&#xD;
route map’ which explains the different stages and key issues concerning public procurement of ferry&#xD;
services.

Abstract: The aim of this article is to identify factors that facilitate increased use of intermodal transport for&#xD;
perishable products based on a survey of firms exporting fresh fish from Norway to Continental Europe.&#xD;
The experiences in the Norwegian aquaculture industry indicate that intermodal transport solutions must&#xD;
be expanded and that the long haul by rail must run all the way to a central hub in Europe. This can only&#xD;
be achieved with a balanced flow of goods and if processors coordinate transport to deliver sufficiently&#xD;
large volumes to fill trains at an acceptable frequency.

Abstract: The present paper deals with the impact of manufacturing internationalisation, in the forms of&#xD;
international trade, cooperation agreements – measured by inward and outward processing trade (IPT and&#xD;
OPT, respectively) - and FDI, on the transport industry employment. Descriptive statistics and&#xD;
econometric analysis are carried out at the “regional-industry” level (20 NUTS2 regions and 8 transport&#xD;
sub-industries) with reference to Italy in the period 1996-2001. Results show that export, FDI and the&#xD;
components of IPT (temporary import and re-export) positively affect the transport employment variation&#xD;
in 1996-2001, while import and the components of OPT (temporary export and re-import) display a&#xD;
negative impact.
