In Gran Bretagna e negli Stati Uniti John Fowles raggiunse fama immediata con il suo primo romanzo, The Collector (1963), da alcuni considerato il suo capolavoro. Viene da chiedersi perché in Italia sia passato pressoché inosservato e, nonostante le ripetute pubblicazioni, abbia avuto una sorte ben diversa da quella toccatagli nei paesi di lingua inglese. A trent'anni dalla prima edizione, le vicende legate alla versione italiana offrono interessanti spunti di riflessione sul ruolo della traduzione nella fortuna di un testo letterario e per l'immagine di un autore all'estero.

Un lettore che affronti per la prima volta un'opera di John Fowles può rimanere colpito dal fascino, dalla pregnanza e dall'originalità di quest'immagine, che compare in "The French Lieutenant's Woman", il romanzo cui è maggiormente legata la fama internazionale di quest'autore inglese. D'altra parte, come evidenziato dalla presente ricerca, chi conosca un po' più a fondo la produzione letteraria di Fowles non può non notare che tale similitudine, introdotta quasi incidentalmente, come una semplice osservazione sul linguaggio, contiene una definizione epigrammatica dello stile da parte dello scrittore. Quest'immagine costituisce di fatto la sintesi, la trasfigurazione poetica dell'idea di stile di Fowles, dalla quale si deduce che l'autore vede nel linguaggio un mezzo espressivo che si può 'piegare' nei più diversi modi (o, per usare un'espressione meno poetica e più tecnica, impiegare nelle diverse varietà), per giungere ad una formulazione adeguata del soggetto trattato, formulazione che risulta così consona al carattere dei personaggi e all'atmosfera del romanzo.

This paper proposes a study of the process of rewriting in specialised translation through an analysis of the Italian version of an article on EMU from “The Economist” published by the Italian weekly “L'Espresso”. Rewriting includes reformulation of the message, adaptation to the conventions of the TL culture and manipulation to reflect TL ideology and power structures. An inquiry into the strategies carried out in translating the article for “L'Espresso” shows that rewriting a text on econornics in Italian implies selection of a more formal register, hedging of direct statements, omissions and additions, but above all modification of the epistemic degree of forecasts. In conclusion, rewriting in this specialised field presupposes an in-depth knowledge of economic discourse in both languages.

Traditionally, terminological products such as glossaries have been used to find suitable equivalents in the coding stage of translation, i.e. in the reformulation of the message in the target language. Developments in terminology have led to the creation of glossaries and terminological data banks which now often include background information on terms. On these grounds, an experiment has been conducted with fourth-year students of the translation course at the Scuola Superiore di Lingue Moderne per Interpreti e Traduttori of the University of Trieste to ascertain whether terminological products can also be of service in the preliminary stage of translation, i.e. in message decoding through text analysis. A model of terminological text analysis for the purposes of specialised translation was devised and a group of students was asked to adopt it for the experiment, while a control group of students was given a list of translation equivalents and was allowed to use other reference material. Although further tests are needed to confirm the authors' hypotheses, the results of the experiment suggest that terminological products including background information on terms may partially make up for lack of subject-specific knowledge when conducting text analysis in the preliminary stage of translation of highly specialised texts.

In LSP translating the production of naturally-sounding, idiomatic target texts is often taken to mean special attention in the use of terminology. However, research in the distribution of the elements of the message in different languages shows that the representation of the information structure is language-specific and that there are language-specific focus-attributing positions within the syntactic structure of sentences. In this paper, features of information structure and focus-attributing positions will be studied in a corpus of English-Italian translations of popular physics articles and compared with a corpus of original Italian articles on the same topic to see if the Italian information structure is used in translation or whether target texts reproduce the original English information structure. Results will show that translations use – at least to a certain extent – the original English information structure, therefore making target texts sound partly unnatural. A number of revision strategies will be proposed to reinstate a more typical Italian information structure in order to ensure that the informational value of sentence elements is preserved and higher-quality LSP translations are produced.

Lo studio si propone di analizzare la traduzione di una particolare categoria di elementi coesivi, i connettori interfrasali, in un corpus di articoli di argomento economico tratti da quotidiani e riviste specializzate tradotti dall’inglese in italiano. Lo studio mette in rapporto i risultati sulla frequenza dei connettori con quelli derivanti dall’analisi di un corpus comparabile di articoli scritti originariamente in italiano. Soffermandosi in particolare sui casi di esplicitazione traduttiva tramite l’inserimento di connettori non presenti nel testo di partenza, lo studio conclude che tale esplicitazione può, da un lato, essere collegata al tentativo dei traduttori di uniformarsi a una norma di produzione testuale tipica dell’italiano e, dall’altro, essere considerata come spia del processo di decodifica dell’informazione (spesso di carattere specialistico) veicolata dall’originale.
