The following is Sergio Viaggio's reply to Peter Newmark's letter written after the two had met in Trieste in November 1993.

In his article 'The Task of the Translator' Walter Benjamin claims that, just as 'no poem is intended for the reader, no picture for the beholder, no symphony for the listener,' so no translation can serve a 'transmitting function' (Benjamin 1972). On the contrary, the purpose of translation is to manifest the essential 'kinship' between languages and to grope towards that 'pure language' of which ali existing languages are merely fragments. Apart from ttie extraordinary presumption Benjamin displays here in denying different poets and artists different intentions in the genesis of their work by submitting them to an overall determinist 'purpose' greater than themselves (and thus tinkering with the meaning of the verb 'intend'), one is also struck by the transcendentalism inherent in his idea of a 'pure language' that somehow unites all other languages.

Lavoro che dal principante viene ben volentieri accettato, a meno che non si tratti di macchinari molto complessi o di manuali destinati agli specialisti del settore. In fin dei conti noi tutti abbiamo una certa familiarità con un gran numero di macchine ed elettrodomestici che usiamo quotidianamente. Inoltre noi tutti siamo stati qualche volta invasi da un senso di frustrazione o di rabbia tentando di seguire delle istruzioni tradotte in modo incomprensibile. E di conseguenza la voglia di fare meglio della massa dei traduttori improvvisati c'è. Ma pur nella sua apparente semplicità la traduzione di un libretto di istruzione non è priva di insidie. Vorrei soffermarmi in questo articolo su alcune difficoltà di carattere stilistico inerenti alla traduzione dall'italiano verso il neerlandese della parte tecnica del libretto, tralasciando per ora i problemi che riguardano la traduzione della presentazione, che normalmente si trova all'inizio o alla fine del libretto.

Nel proporre la traduzione del "libro mastro" di Mario Untersteiner, 'l sofisti', Alonso Tordesillas, docente di storia della filosofia antica aii'Université de Provence presenta il risultato di un vero e proprio lavoro archeologico. Lo studio di riferimento deii'Untersteiner fu pubblicato per la prima volta in Italia nel 1949 e si affermò subito per lo "sforzo di tener insieme filologia e filosofia, dato documentario e scavo esegetico", "dottrina e intuizione", modello di storiografia filosofica che, percorrendo i dati non rinuncia a pensare i problemi". Con chiarezza e sobrietà il traduttore precisa una delle sue scelte metodologiche, che è del resto anche indicativa delle sue posizioni filologiche e filosofiche. Oltre ai suoi innegabili meriti di precisione concettuale e filologica, questa traduzione si segnala per la sua particolare "leggibilità". In italiano, la sintassi di Mario Untersteiner è spesso assai travagliata e complessa, trattandosi in questo caso di una seconda stesura, ampliata ed integrata rispetto alla prima forma dei Sofisti. La tentazione era dunque forte, per un traduttore francese, di rompere il ritmo peculiare del filologo-filosofo e di optare per frasi più brevi. Alonso Tordesillas si è invece attenuto il più possibile al rispetto della sintassi del testo italiano, con una resa spesso anche elegante. Diamo due esempi tratti rispettivamente dal primo e dal secondo volume.

Les noms propres sont intraduisibles - (leur intraduisibilité étant souvent présentée comme un de /eurs traits caractéristiques) et encore: - les noms propres ne doivent pas etre traduits, sauf s'il existe déjà une traduction. Telles sont les deux assertions, apparemment contradictoires qui synthétisent les positions concernant les rapports entre noms propres et traduction. Le but de notre étude est d'essayer d'établir des critères descriptifs et/ou normatifs pour déclarer l'intraduisibilité ou la traduisibilité d'un nom propre.

Il presente contributo intende illustrare il funzionamento del sistema di traduzione automatica Systran, con particolare riferimento al suo impiego attuale presso la Commissione europea. Dopo aver fornito brevi cenni storici sull'evoluzione del sistema fino ai giorni nostri, ci si soffermerà sui vantaggi del sistema. Si procederà quindi ad una sommaria descrizione del processo traduttivo adottato dal sistema, per offrire, infine, alcuni esempi di applicazione di Systran nelle versioni francese-italiano e inglese-italiano. Lo scopo è quello di vincere la naturale diffidenza del traduttore di fronte alla "macchina", considerata spesso una oscura minaccia alla professionalità e all'arte del traduttore stesso, ma che tale non è. Basta infatti esaminare più da vicino la realtà della traduzione automatica per comprendere che essa soddisfa un certo tipo di esigenze e fornisce una prestazione estremamente diversa - sia nella forma che nella destinazione - da quella di un buon traduttore. Ovviamente, per poter crescere e prosperare, un sistema del genere deve essere in prima istanza accettato dai traduttori, che, essendone fra gli utenti principali (in qualità di revisori), dovrebbero pertanto contribuire al suo perfezionamento. Eppure sono proprio loro, i traduttori, a mostrare maggiore scetticismo nei confronti di un sistema che fornisce risultati certamente sorprendenti, ma comunque ben lungi da una resa perfetta sia da un punto di vista semantico che stilistico.

Ogni disciplina, dalla linguistica alla psicoanalisi, affronta e interpreta la problematica dell'errore in modo molto diverso elaborando strategie e interventi altrettanto diversi. Strettamente legato alla tematica della 'norma' è il problema degli 'errori' di lingua - avverte Monica Berretta (1977) nel saggio "Linguistica ed educazione linguistica. Guida all'insegnamento dell'italiano" - dove 'errore' nell'ottica tradizionale è (era) qualsiasi deviazione dal tipo di lingua scelto come 'modello'. Alla luce di queste considerazioni eviteremo consapevolmente di parlare di "errori di competenza" per riferirei, semmai, ad "errori di apprendimento" e non guarderemo all'errore come ad un fenomeno aberrante da reprimere nell'ottica, del resto, di una tradizione linguistica volta ad una "pedagogia" dell'errore.

In thinking about the various essays and articles included in this volume, l have been tempted to call this preface by several different names. First l thought of entitling it "Armchair Ruminations on the Art of Translation" in honor of those English philosophers who engaged in "armchair linguistics" in the 1950s. Then, to paraphrase Eliot, l came up with "To Criticize the (Translation) Critic", since much of what appears in this volume is, in one way or another, concerned with the criticism of translations. Finally, however, it seemed to me that the best title was "The Quest for the Perfect Translation," which corresponds roughly to "The Pot of Gold at the End of the Rainbow." The titles are not merely facetious, as will become clear in the course of the following remarks. Translation theorists, translators and translation critics are all actively engaged on a spiritual and intellectual adventure, in which the Holy Grail that they are seeking is knowledge, as precious as the golden fleece and as maddeningly impossible to discover as the philosopher's stones.

In any information addressed to some recipient, there is always a communicative intent, something that determines the communicative structure of the sentence and may necessitate a restructuring of text in translation. The subject of this paper is comparison between the communicative structure (CS) of sentences in the Russian and ltalian languages, in order to see what kind of text transformations result from the differences found, and to identify the more common restructuring patterns, primarily when translating from Russian into ltalian. The study is based on works by Anton ehekhov, Konstantin Paustovsky and Mikhail Sholokhov, translated into ltalian, and a story by the modern ltalian writer Seppe Fenoglio, translated into Russian. l will not go deeply into the history and theory of the issue which is covered by ampie literature. l will only quote this statement by V. Mathesius, one of the earlier students of the subject who underscored the linguistic nature of es and linked it to word order as its basic means of expression.

It would seem that even if the edifice of the subjunctive may be said to be crumbling, the foundations are manifestly still solid enough, above all in written ltalian, to create difficulties for ltalians required to translate from their own language into another. This is especially true if the target language is one such as English, where the scarcity of recognizable forms of the subjunctive often results in the translator having to come up with some type of 'modulation' or 'transposition'. In the light of this state of affairs l propose a brief survey of the principal difficulties, both of a theoretical and practical nature, that one encounters in translating the ltalian subjunctive into English.

The Cali of the Wild marked Jack London's rise to fame; it was an instant success and is generally acclaimed as his masterpiece. As H. L. Mencken wrote of him: "No other popular writer of his time did any better writing than you will find in The Cali of the Wild'. Since its first publication by Macmillan in 1903 it has continued to be read avidly by children and adults alike. Gianni Celati's 1986 translation of 'The Cali of the Wild' appears in the Einaudi series "Scrittori tradotti da scrittori" which includes the translations of many classics by writers such as Natalia Ginzburg (Madame Bovary) and Giorgio Manganelli (Poe's short stories) who also gained recognition as translators. Part of the appeal of this series lies in reading the work of a famous writer interpreted by a well-known writer from another period; indeed, the book-jacket gives equal prominence to the author and to the translator-author.

'Die Klosterschule': questo il titolo originale dell'opera di Barbara Frischmuth che ci viene proposta nella piacevole, sebbene non infallibile traduzione di Giuseppina Scarpati. Si tratta del primo lavoro in prosa pubblicato nel 1968 dall'autrice austriaca, nata in un paesino della Stiria, Altaussee, nel 1941 (e non nel 1942, come afferma erroneamente la traduttrice nella postfazione all'opera dal titolo "Barbara Frischmuth: identità come astuzia dell'immaginazione"), e rappresenta il frutto di quasi un decennio di sperimentazione e di ricerca linguistica. L'articlo propone un esame della traduzione italiana ma prima di procedere giova fornire una introduzione all'opera, che consente di presagire le notevoli difficoltà traduttive insite nella trasposizione in italiano di un esperimento linguistico tanto complesso e ragionato.

In Gran Bretagna e negli Stati Uniti John Fowles raggiunse fama immediata con il suo primo romanzo, The Collector (1963), da alcuni considerato il suo capolavoro. Viene da chiedersi perché in Italia sia passato pressoché inosservato e, nonostante le ripetute pubblicazioni, abbia avuto una sorte ben diversa da quella toccatagli nei paesi di lingua inglese. A trent'anni dalla prima edizione, le vicende legate alla versione italiana offrono interessanti spunti di riflessione sul ruolo della traduzione nella fortuna di un testo letterario e per l'immagine di un autore all'estero.

I found Sergio Viaggio's article Contesting Peter Newmark in the first issue of R.I. T. T. diffuse and verbose, and hope to reply succinctly.

Models of Translation Analysis in any discipline involves decomposing the object of study. Some features are selected far study and are brought to the foreground. Others, equally important, are relegated to the background. Hjelmslev has discussed this selection process and related it to the semiotic concept of pertinence (Greimas and Courtes 1982: 31 ). The selection of those aspects of a phenomenon that one will study is made on the basis of a set of research parameters. The research parameters reflect the pertinence of the phenomenon to the scholar. Research parameters in translation studies might include an alternative perspectives on translation. We argue that the textual approach to translation can serve as that baseline. Without an integrating concept we run the risk that translation will be understood only in parts, and never as a whole.

This short contribution is not intended as a scholarly treatise on translation theory and practice, nor as a criticai review of the latest published translation of some outstanding literary or non-literary work. Rather, it was conceived simply as a way of listing a few tragically sad and, at the same time, tragically funny observations of a translation teacher (me) on a gastronomie l linguistic journey through the main tourist attractions in ltaly over the past few years. And though amusement and indeed some merriment are undeniably the immediate aim of this excursus from the more serious stuff of translation criticism, this "comedy of errors" or "comedy of horrors" is also specifically designed to convey a piea to both employers and translators alike.

Prossima alla soglia degli ottant'anni, Marguerite Duras riesce ancora a trasmettere stupefacenti emozioni ai suoi lettori; ci riesce, stavolta, con questo suo 'Yann Andréa Steiner', romanzo anch'esso intriso di tutte quelle motivazioni, tensioni e ricerche della scrittura. Dall'analisi svolta in questo contributo si intuisce che l'approccio traduttivo nei confronti dell'opera durassiana non muove dal chiedersi: come avrebbe detto questa cosa Duras in italiano?, perché, semplicemente, Duras in italiano non dice. Più giusta strategia sta nel chiedersi piuttosto: quali mezzi ho io traduttore per dire in italiano questa cosa affinché venga mantenuta, possibilmente e credibilmente, la medesima intensità di espressione, la stessa verità di ciò che Duras dice in francese? A parere di chi scrive, la traduzione è tutta coerentemente impostata su quest'ultimo principio anche quando l'obiettivo si allarga sul campo lungo della struttura sintattica e della costruzione del periodo.

The translation into ltalian of the food images in Shakespeare's plays provides an interesting example of the problems related to communication in a different time and with a different historical and cultural background. As with dramatic art in general, the translation of Shakespeare's language, both intra- and interlingually, can be approached either by considering the dramatic text as literature or by considering its production as a performing art. Even the production of Shakespeare's works for an English-speaking audience can be considered as a sort of translation because a modern audience can no longer be expected to understand ali the details of the text that were readily comprehensible by the audience of his time. Therefore it could be said that the real hermeneutical problem in both intra- and interlingual translation is whether to interpret what the author actually intended to communicate.
