;Guerreschi, PaolaLa Riccia, LuigiThe contribution presents work on the definition of the structure of the local ecological network within the territorial context of the Po Valley in the section from Saluzzo to Pian del Re in Piedmont, using the new Corine Land Cover of Piedmont 2021. The geospa-tial analyses and cartographic representations are aimed at the identification and predisposition on the territory of interventions useful for the protection of habitats and species of interest for the biodiversity conservation, which become strategic for reason-ing about the overall ecological quality of these internal moun-tain areas. The mapping of the territory’s ecological functional-ity was carried out using a methodology that assesses the level of ecological status, starting from the different types of land use and five defined indicators (Naturalness, Relevance for Conservation, Extroversion, Fragility, Irreversibility). Having assessed the level of ecological functionality, the best connections between the ecologi-cally strongest areas were determined by identifying the least-cost paths. The product of this analysis is a small piece to be read in a broader context of the valorisation of the natural capital of this valley, known for its uncontaminated high mountain landscapes as well as a tourist destination for trekking enthusiasts as users of the rich trail network.65 - PublicationDal GIS letterario allo sviluppo turistico locale: cartografia e itinerari odeporici letterari in Trentino(2023)
;Besana, AngeloGabellieri, NicolaIn recent years, the applications of GIS software for the processing, analysis and representation of geographic data have expanded to in-clude the georeferencing of literary works. In particular, the travel writ-ings of the past, rich in precise topographical spatial references, allow the development of literary geographic information systems, the so-called “Literary GIS”. Literary GIS can support research regarding the practices of travelers as well as their categories of reading and describ-ing territories and landscape that may have disappeared today. Given the existing interest in literary tourism, tthese information systems could be of interest for the development of cultural itineraries. The pa-per presents an ongoing project aiming to the development of a his-torical and literary GIS; such dataset involves travel literature describ-ing the territory of Trentino and produced between the 18th and 19th centuries during the era of the Grand Tour. Texts of travel writings that represent local spaces and landscapes have been transcribed, classi-fied and georeferenced on the basis of present references. In this paper, we specifically explore the potential of such dataset to develop specific cultural routes to enable tourists to dwell the territory in the footsteps of famous travelers of the past, benefiting from literary descriptions of disappeared or still existing landscapes to enrich their experience. As a result, a cartography of some itineraries for widespread and sustain-able tourism development and placetelling for lesser-known contexts of the Trentino territory is proposed.40 24 - PublicationL’industrializzazione dell’agricoltura nella Piana del Sele: una prospettiva geografica basata sull’Urban Atlas Copernicus(2023)
;Matarazzo, Nadia ;Imbrenda, Vito ;Coluzzi, Rosa ;Pace, Letizia ;Samela, CaterinaLanfredi, Mariaritorial transformations: in fact, its authors are geographers, physicists and environmental engineers who are experts in remote sensing. The aim is to study the recent expansion of agricultural capitalism in a strategic region for the economy of the South: the Sele Plain. In just a few years, this territory with a strong agricultural vocation has experienced a drastic alteration of the land cover: in 2012 there was a substantial bal-ance between arable land and greenhouses, but in 2018, in just six years, there was a substantial growth of greenhouses own detriment of arable land. This is the consequence of the expansion of the so-called “fourth range” in the fruit and vegetable market - which has also grown up in Italy in the last two decades - or rather the greenhouse production of fresh, washed and ready-to-eat products. It is a phenomenon which, in addition to its commercial value, has first-rate geo-economic, social and environmental effects. First, the penetration of local markets by large ag-ricultural capitalists; secondly, the reduction of the ability of ecosystems to provide goods and services; thirdly, the depletion of the landscape and the potential increase in hydrogeological risk. The survey methodology involves the analysis of land cover changes in the municipalities of Battipaglia and Bellizzi, in the province of Salerno, in the 2012-2018 time span through the Urban Atlas Copernicus, created using very high resolution satellite data. Through the InVEST software, the observed changes were combined with the quantification of the loss generated by the reduction of the ecosystem goods and services.33 7 - PublicationIl trasporto combinato marittimo in Italia: cambiamenti nella geografia portuale ed effetti territoriali(2023)Tadini, MarcelloIn recent years, maritime transport has become increasingly important due to its primary role in containing the mobility of goods by road. The need to make the logistics system more sustainable from an en-vironmental point of view and more competitive in economic terms has led the European Union to promote the use of combined maritime transport, with particular attention to the so-called “Motorways of the Sea”. The latter identify the segment of maritime transport based on fixed lines at a defined interval that use Ro-Ro ships in which the loading and unloading of the cargo does not require the aid of cranes or other external mechanical means, because the goods are arranged on platforms or in containers, loaded and unloaded by means of self-propelled vehicles. Despite the growth recorded by Ro-Ro traffic in recent years in Europe, the interest of the literature for this freight transport option is still limited since the focus is mainly on container traffic. Therefore, it is considered important to deepen the analysis of this in-termodal solution that appears relevant in particular in our country. Indeed, fact, in addition to being widespread in Italian ports, Ro-Ro plays a fundamental role both in intra-national connections and in infra-Mediterranean connections. In the light of these considerations, the paper proposes a research that, starting from the creation of a database of Ro-Ro traffic in Italian ports in the period 2011-2022, leads to the thematic repre-sentation of the aforementioned data through the support of the car-tographic tool. The latter constitutes a fundamental requirement for carrying out the analysis of the evolution of the combined sea-road traffic. The aim is to evaluate its impact on the port geography, the differences between the Tyrrhenian and the Adriatic shores as well as the territorial effects induced in terms of ports centrality and port regions development.
48 9 - PublicationBlue and green transition?
;Pesaresi, Cristiano ;Pavia, DavideDe Vito, CorradoThis work first provides a framework focused on a number of literary re-views carried out at international level to summarise and highlight the possible benefits that can be obtained by GIS and Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications to tackle the emergency caused by the COVID-19 pan-demic. Later, the present work gives a synthesis of the applied research conducted in Italy to provide added value, through geospatial and tem-poral analysis and specific elaborations and functionalities, in the in-terpretative examination and territorial comparison, the dynamic rep-resentation of the phenomenon, the predictive hypotheses and in the implementational measures for the management of critical phases. In the field of the geotechnological proposals, this study then focuses on the Dynamic Space-Time Diffusion Simulator in a GIS Environment de-veloped to analyse the COVID-19 spread in Rome, showing some demon-strative applications based on the data provided by the UOC Hygiene and Public Health Service – Local Health Unit Rome 1, for the period from February 25th to September 26th 2020, which have been elaborated af-ter ad hoc processes of data cleaning and optimisation. In particular, some sets of screenshots extracted by the Simulator are discussed and analysed in order to put in evidence the spatial and diachronic evolu-tion of the phenomenon with reference to: the total number of cases of COVID-19; the total number of deaths due to COVID-19; the total number of cases of COVID-19 with information regarding the different outcomes. Based on accurate geocoding processes and devised as a real-time mon-itoring and surveillance tool, the Simulator makes it possible to move in the perspectives of precision preparedness, highly detailed territorial screening and interdisciplinary integration, in order to test effective and replicable operational solutions in the cases of emergency.42 11
