- PublicationDer Autor und seine Übersetzer(EUT Edizioni Università di Trieste, 2005)Magris, ClaudioClaudio Magris reports his experience as an author owing a lot to translation, the task of self-translating and the fact of being translated in many different languages. In general, “translations” are underestimated in their intellectual value. As far as literary translations are concerned, they should be considered as real creative activities. Literary texts themselves – such as the short stories “Averroës Search” (“La Busca de Averroes”) by Borges and “Bad Nature” (“Mala índole”) by Javier Marìas – often reflect on translations and on questions dealing with translating issues. Moreover, Magris points out specific translating difficulties concerning his works (such as rhythmic, metaphorical and cross-cultural questions).

Walter Benjamin als Übersetzer seiner selbst(EUT Edizioni Università di Trieste, 2005)Giuriato, DavideDuring the summer of 1933, in Ibiza, Walter Benjamin begins the translation into French of some parts of his Berliner Kindheit with the help of Jean Selz, an art critic who does not know any German. The work on the translation from German into French is of a peculiar kind, since Benjamin has first to proceed with a rough transcription and then let Selz work on the paraphrases and on the revision of the French text; a process which brings Benjamin to a re-reading of the original German version, thus creating a cycle in the writing/translating activity. According to the author of the essay, the fact that these five translations (“Matinée d’hiver”, “Livres de garçons”, “Loggia”, “Deux fanfares” and “Chasse aux papillons”) by Benjamin himself, went unnoticed, is connected with the ‘secondary’ status attributed to translations. The interesting point is that Benjamin is translating his own memories, while these have not yet been finished in their original German version. The critic should also ask himself which kind of writing activity is here envisaged, if it is deeply and dynamically intermingled with the translation. The article examines this relationship.

They pertain to the intercultural appropriation process of foreign knowledge and ideas. The translation of Hölderlin’s poems sheds a new light on the written text, it enables to capture the strangeness of the verses. By starting with the necessary translation practices needed for a passage of the poem "Dichterberuf" by Hölderlin, the essay illustrates how every translation should embark itself in an interpretative task which carries several discursive levels with itself, from the linguistic to the historical-cultural one. Moreover, the deficiencies in the department of Translation Studies, based on the presupposition of equivalence, is highlighted through a passage from Hölderlin’s poem "Hälfte des Lebens".

Die Übersetzung im friaulischen Werk von Pier Paolo Pasolini(EUT Edizioni Università di Trieste, 2005)Gerosa, RicardaThe composition of "Poesie a Casarsa" (1942) is characterised by a complex weaving of procedures for which Pasolini seamlessly oscillate between Friulian and Italian while translating himself from one language into the other in an uninterrupted exploration of expressive possibilities. The linguistic itinerary of the texts becomes thus double and circular. The coherence of the dialectal choice in relation to the young author’s poetics and to his literary models is also illustrated.
1733 3129 - PublicationPlaytime: William Shakespeare, Jacques Tati, Paul Celan(EUT Edizioni Università di Trieste, 2005)Zanetti, SandroThe poem "Playtime" by Paul Celan (1968) shows a fabric of intertextual allusions to the homonymous film by Jacques Tati. These references concern a critical representation of the phenomena of depersonalisation and standardisation which pervade the contemporary age. The activities of writing and translating do not stand in a direct relationship here. Nonetheless, the work of Celan in the poem is deeply linked with a question that, albeit treated in different ways, is touched both in Shakespeare’s drama and in Tati’s film. The question regards the possibility of transmitting events or situations from the past to a present which is characterised by historical ignorance. The analysis brings to light a Shakespearian signature which relates in particular to the conception of historical time as elaborated in "Hamlet".

782 2421 - PublicationSchreiben (Raymond Roussel, Georges Perec) und Übersetzen(EUT Edizioni Università di Trieste, 2005)Stingelin, MartinThe author analyses some of the metalinguistic forms that can be found in the works of Roussel and Perec (respectively in the short story "Parmi les Noirs" and in the novel "La disparition"). Particular attention is then paid to certain features of the lipogram. The playful nature of these practices inscribes itself in the realm of linguistic criticism, nourished by the adoption of formal constraints (for instance, the abandonment of the vocal ‘e’ in "La disparition" by Perec), which must moreover be explicitly incorporated into the content of the text.

The “writing scenery” (of the “author”) is set against the “translating scenery” (of the “translator”): What does to translate really mean? What happens when translators “write”? Is the translator a sort of double of the author? From a Romantic point of view, authors and translators are very close to each other. On the other hand the main translating concepts of the XX century are influenced by language scepticism and the aspiration to a pure language.

Between the two extremes of translation as a simple exercise and the creative translation, the author advocates for an intermediate solution, wishing for translations characterised by a high degree of individual creativity. Still, the author makes it clear that this practice should avoid the detrimental effect of the loss of the text’s original tone, which needs to transpire from the translation as well.
