Abstract
In this research work a simulation model is developed to study the effects of change in frequency or capacity of suburban trains on waiting time for the given demands at various suburban railway stations. With the help of the simulation model optimal frequencies (or headways) of suburban trains is determined. As the study area Madras Beach to Tambaram meter gauge suburban railway section in Chennai, India was taken and extensive data collection regarding sale of card and season tickets was done for 16 hrs from 6.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m.. Traffic surveys at suburban railway platforms were conducted to study arrival pattern of commuters. Simulation model had been developed to see the effect of change in frequency and/or capacity of trains on waiting time of passengers at different railway stations. The developed model has been used to study the effect of operating 8 and 9. coach trains with different headways. It is determined that 8 coach train with 5 minute headway and 9 coach train with 7 minute headway gave better results among other alternatives.
