Abstract
This paper is the first outcome of a long-term search on archaeological excavations in Aquileia during the first half of the 19th Century. It concerns ‘public’ excavations managed by the Austrian local government between 1815 and 1831. The paper has two sections. The first is a history of Aquileia from the second Napoleonic occupation (1805) until ca 1830. It outlines the administrative and cultural frame in which the excavations were conceived and implemented. The second section is an archaeological and topographical study of the 19th century documents. His purpose is to recover all possible data about sites, archeological materials and small finds from the excavations. The research results are highlighted through GIS cartography.
