Abstract
In the early 2000s, the debate surrounding Transhumanism and the potential of science to transform human beings prompted discussion about extending these possibilities to non-human animals. One philosophical dispute concerned the possibility of enhancing animals’ cognitive abilities to near-human levels. This would grant animals access to intellectual, social, and cul-tural resources that are currently reserved for humans. The purpose of this paper is to reopen the ethical debate on the cognitive enhancement of animals, particularly in light of advances in gene editing technologies. The aim is twofold: firstly, to address previously discussed issues, such as the lack of consent, and secondly, to expand the ethical analysis to consider possible fu-tures of a world in which animals are close to human in terms of intelligence.
