Abstract
There is an ongoing conflict over the interpretation of Czechoslovakia’s communist re¬gime which resurfaces from time to time. It is a seemingly never-ending war with irrecon¬cilable positions and fought in media, politics and historical institutions. One of the most important actors is the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes. The essay introduces the foundations of the politics of memory in the post-communist Czech Republic. Then it follows the foundation of the Institute and analyses its political background as well as selected debates about the communist regime in the mainstream media. The main part closes with an analysis of the recent development at the Institute and its controversies.
