Abstract
In the context of the Restoration, the Sephardic tradition serves as orientation for several sectors of German Judaism; in opposition to the increasing restrictions of the present, it advocates a line of identity that is strongly connoted as secular and cultural. In "Der Rabbi von Bacherach", Heine symbolically represents the tension between different aspects of Judaism and of diaspora, polarising them in the conflict between the spirit of the small community and the disenchantment of the marrano, behind which the eradicated condition of the intellectual is concealed.
