From Nationalisation to Europeanisation: Shaping the Memory of the First World War in the Julian March (1919-2019)

Abstract
This article examines the public uses of history and the politics of memory of the First World War on Italy’s eastern border (i.e., the provinces of Trieste and Gorizia). By focusing on the physical remains, monuments, and narratives associated with the conflict, it emphasises the connection between cultural heritage and memory policies, shaped by various actors. These include national institutions, local authorities, cultural and combatant associations, political movements, and NGOs. A one-hundred-year time frame is considered to ensure comprehensive analysis, from the immediate post-war period to the Centenary of the war. This periodisation provides a more thorough overview than previous contributions on the same subject and highlights the progressive shift in Italian politics of memory from the national paradigm to the European scale of meaning.
