Abstract
Population ethics is the branch of moral philosophy that studies how to compare scenarios in which the number, quality of life, and identity of the affected persons vary. By analysing paradoxes such as the Non-Identity Problem and the Repugnant Conclusion, it raises fundamental questions about the nature of value and our responsibilities toward future generations. This entry reconstructs the main theoretical debates, presents the most influential models, and assesses their strengths and limitations. It also shows how these discussions bear on practice in areas such as the ethics of procreation, intergenerational justice, climate policy, and the evaluation of emerging technologies.
L’etica delle popolazioni è il ramo della filosofia morale che studia come confrontare scenari in cui varia il numero, la qualità della vita e l’identità delle persone coinvolte. Analizzando paradossi quali il problema della non-identità e la Conclusione Ripugnante, l’etica delle popolazioni ha sollevato interrogativi fondamentali sulla natura del valore e sulle responsabilità verso le generazioni future. Questa voce ricostruisce i principali dibattiti teorici, presenta i modelli teorici più influenti e ne analizza vantaggi e limiti. Infine, mostra come queste riflessioni abbiano implicazioni pratiche in ambiti come l’etica della procreazione, la giustizia intergenerazionale, le politiche climatiche e la valutazione delle tecnologie emergenti.
