Abstract
Contemporary philosophy of psychiatry of Anglo-American tradition deals with conceptual and methodological issues such as: What is a mental disorder? Are current nosologies adequate? Do classification depend mainly on history and culture, or rather on nature's joints? What is the most appropriate model of explanation for mental disorders? In this article I first distinguish between this approach to the philosophy of psychiatry from other ones, then I focus on the issue of the natural versus cultural origin of mental disorders. I illustrate and briefly discuss essentialism, the natural kind view, and social constructivism.
