Abstract
This paper addresses a key issue in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) ethics, that is, the impact of AI systems and, more specifically, of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) algo-rithms, on our freedom, and particularly, our moral freedom, that is, our freedom to choose and act as moral agents. To this aim, after introducing the concept of moral freedom and clarifying its constitutive dimensions and specifically preconditions, the paper argues how pervasively in-terconnected ML and DL algorithms, deployed in almost every domain of our society, can si-lently affect them and therefore profoundly endanger our capacity to choose and act as moral agents, bridging insights from the main debates on the topic in moral and socio-political philos-ophy and digital and AI ethics.
