Abstract
In this work we provide a means to categorise the polysemy of Russian verbal prefixes (RVPs) in an accessible way for practical purposes. By combining the results and the formal conventions of the other approaches that have been proposed in academic literature for the study of RVP meanings, we elaborate our “integrated approach”. Thus, we use the RVP u- as our case study (which we chose for its ‘enigmatic’ semantics and the conflicting descriptions provided in the literature) for a double exemplifying application of our approach, resulting in: a) a classification of the meanings of u-; b) an illustrative comparison of u-verbs in A. Platonov’s Kotlovan (The Founding Pit) with their equivalents in the Italian translation and some renditions of ours, too. On the basis of that, a typological classification of equivalents is given for a better understanding of u- and, more broadly, of RVPs in translation.
