Tre testimonianze sulla metrica di Difilo

Abstract
Per avere un quadro più completo della varietà metrica della commedia difilea, meritano di
essere considerate alcune testimonianze fornite da autori latini di III e IV sec. d.C. Lattanzio e
Aftonio (test. 16a-b) insistono sul predominio del trimetro giambico nella commedia nuova,
ma lo stesso Aftonio, altrove (test. 18a), attesta per Difilo, come pure per Menandro, l’impiego
dell’eupolideo, metro quasi mai usato nella commedia di IV secolo. Inoltre Mario Plozio Sacerdote
(test. 18a) e, ancora, Aftonio (testt. 18b-d) conoscono la denominazione ‘difilio’ per un
metro lirico, noto anche come ‘cherilio’ e ‘angelico’, usato già da Stesicoro: con ogni probabilità
il nome deriva dal commediografo. Dove e come eupolidei e difilî possano essere stati usati da
Difilo rimane non chiaro e l’incertezza è direttamente connessa al problema del ruolo della musica
e della funzione del coro nella commedia nuova.
In order to have a more complete picture of the metrical variety of Diphilean comedy, some testimonia
provided by the Latin authors of the third and fourth centuries AD deserve to be taken into account.
Lactantius and Apthonius (test. 16a-b) insist on the predominance of the iambic trimeter in the New
Comedy, but Apthonius himself in another passage (test. 18a) attests for Diphilus, as well as for Menander,
the employment of the Eupolidean, a metre almost never used in the Fourth Century Comedy. Moreover,
Marius Plotius Sacerdos (test. 18a) and, again, Apthonius (testt. 18b-d) know the name ‘diphilean’ for a
lyric metre, also called ‘choerilean’ and ‘angelic’, already used by Stesichorus: in all probability this name
derives from the name of the comic playwright himself. Where and how Eupolideans and Diphileans
could have been used by Diphilus remains unclear, and the uncertainty is directly connected with the
problem of the role of music and the function of the chorus in the New Comedy.
