Abstract
Famoso fin dall’antichità per il ruolo chiave nelle rotte di grande comunicazione fra oriente e occidente
e Sud – Nord del Mediterraneo, lo Stretto di Messina si pone oggi come fulcro e snodo del
traffico navale di molteplice natura, da passeggeri e automezzi fra sponde calabresi e siciliane, a
commerciale, dei container fino a diporto e perfino sportivo.
La ricerca si propone di esaminare un progetto didattico per studenti dell’Istituto Tecnico Nautico
“Caio Duilio” di Messina, attraverso lo studio e la lettura delle carte nautiche per una ottimizzazione
del traffico soprattutto alla luce della nuova tecnologia satellitare. La conoscenza della navigazione
dello Stretto è di estrema importanza per la formazione degli studenti, che trovano nel loro
territorio l’applicabilità delle teorie in un braccio di mare, talora oggetto di cronaca per incidenti
anche gravi che rendono problematica la navigazione. Rimane, comunque, un luogo unico nel
Mediterraneo per l’inestimabile valore paesaggistico e culturale.
Famous since antiquity for their important position on the communication routes from east to west
and from north to south in the Mediterranean, the Straits of Messina to this day play an important
role for the sea traffic of various types, from passenger and vehicle boats and ferries between Sicily
and Calabria, to commercial liners, containers, yachts and even speedboats.
This research intends to examine a teaching project for the students of the “Caio Duilio” Nautical
Institute of Messina, by means of the study and reading of nautical maps to improve traffic conditions
in the Straits, especially in the light of new satellite technology. Knowledge of the navigation
of the Straits is fundamental for the formation of students that will be able to apply the theories
practically, in their own territory, to a stretch of sea, so often in the news for the numerous accidents,
at times serious, that make navigation problematic. It is, however, a unique place in the
Mediterranean both for its natural beauty and for its inestimable cultural value.
