Abstract
All’inizio dell’Ottocento, in un periodo in cui si va affermando un
nuovo sentimento della natura, Gabriel Thouin ripropone, con i suoi
Plans raisonnés de toutes les espèces de jardins (1820), il dibattito
settecentesco tra giardino alla francese e giardino all’inglese.
Nel momento in cui riassume le idee del tempo appena trascorso,
Thouin lavora per dare ‘spazio’ e ‘rilievo’ all’immaginazione e alla
fantasia, disegnando giardini-modello da proporre sia ai “modesti”
abitanti delle campagne, sia alla ricca borghesia cittadina, desiderosa
anch’essa di avere jardins paysagers in una città che (scriverà di lì a
poco Baudelaire) andava trasformandosi velocemente.
At the beginning of the 19th century, when a new feeling for nature is
emerging Gabriel Thouin in his Plans raisonnés de toutes les espèces
de jardins (1820) proposes again the eighteenth-century debate between
the French and the English garden.
While Thouin summarizes the ideas of the time just passed, he tries
to give ‘space’ and ‘emphasis’ to imagination and fantasy, drawing
model gardens for both the “modest” countrymen and the rich urban
bourgeoisie that was also very eager to have jardins paysagers in a
city (as Baudelaire will write shortly after) in rapid transformation.
