Abstract
Claudio Venza (1946-2022), the anarchist and antiauthoritarian historian from Trieste, is mostly know because of his study of the history of anarchism and of the Spanish Civil War. Yet, during the courses he taught at the University of Trieste, Venza plunged into completely different topics, like that of Italian political history of the 1960s and 1970s. This contribution aims at synthetizing Venza’s vision on the 1970s in Italy focusing on only one element, that of leftwing armed struggle. After a necessary foreword which explains why it is difficult to deal with this topic in Italy, the article shows that Venza took leftwing armed struggle seriously. Therefore, he considered it a political and not merely criminal phenomenon. He was also careful to distinguish between armed struggle and terrorism, since the latter implies an element of indiscriminate violence.
