Abstract
This contribution illustrates the different ways in which women, from the second half of the 19th century to the present day, have expressed their prominence in some countries of the Arab world (Egypt, Palestine, Syria and Lebanon), militating in movements that, although of a different nature and not necessarily linked to ‘feminist’ claims, have contributed significantly to the process of modernisationand to laying the roots for a gender awareness in Arab societies. Despite the peculiarities of the individual countries, it emerges that in most of these regions, ‘the woman question’ has been instrumentalised at different times, the various governments and regimes have used and use it to maintain their positions and established hierarchies, over and above political and religious positions, thus proving that it is not a religious question but rather a political one.
