Abstract
Several steles and funerary altars of the “Cimitero degli Eroi” (Heroes’ Cemetery) in Aquileia are copies or imitations of Roman monuments. Some of these, such as the stele of P. Fuficius, are recognizable in Aquileia itself and characterize its ancient remains; the typology of others derives from Rome. The inscriptions are also inspired by the austere model of Roman legionaries’ epitaphs. The ancient appearance of some monuments, such as the altar of the archaeologist Gian Giacomo Porro, is related to the biography of the fallen. In general, a conscious return to the martial values of ancient Rome is understandable in the context of patriotism during the Great War.
