Abstract
In this book I tried to reconstruct a 'biography' of the theatre in Swahili language by relating the theatrical text to its cultural and performative context. In order to understand the dynamics that allowed the development of modern Swahili theatre in both Kenya and Tanzania, I focused on the historical phases that influenced and defined it, namely the pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial period. Although Swahili written theater was influenced by western elements, it did not lose its specificity.
