Monumenti contesi. La tutela dei monumenti e i danni di guerra sul confine nord orientale durante la prima guerra mondiale visti da parte austriaca

Abstract
L’intervento si propone di fornire un quadro sintetico dell’attività di tutela dei monumenti effettuata dalla amministrazione austriaca nel corso della prima guerra mondiale nei territori ora italiani al confine nord-orientale.
Nel 1913 viene allestita nel Prater l’Adria Ausstellung, l’ultimo grande parco tematico temporaneo che celebra la marina e l’Adriatico austriaco. Lungo il canale vengono costruite le riproduzioni in scala reale dei principali edifici monumentali delle città dell’Adriatico, come la Ca’ d’oro di Pirano il palazzo dei rettori di Ragusa, il palazzo pretorio di Capodistria. E’ l’ultima celebrazione dell’Adriatico austriaco e della parte meridionale dell’Impero con i suoi monumenti, contesi però fra le diverse nazionalità.
Sono gli ultimi anni in cui la Zentral-Kommission für Denkmalpflege si occupa ancora attivamente delle tutela dei monumenti nel territorio del Litorale tramite studi, inventari e restauri. Dal 1915 l’attività sarà piuttosto incentrata sulla spasmodica documentazione del patrimonio monumentale del territorio attraversato dalla guerra, con la pubblicazione di Planiscig Denkmale der Kunst in den südlichen Kriegsgebieten: Isonzo-Ebene, Istrien, Dalmatien, Südtirol nel 1915 e dello stesso con Folnesics Bau- und Kunstdenkmale des Küstenlandes nel 1916. Nei periodici della Commissione centrale, invece, nel corso della guerra verranno pubblicati gli articoli che descrivono i danni subiti dai monumenti, anche con un intervento di Max Dvorák su Duino.
Oltre a questo, nel corso della guerra, parallelamente all’attività di tutela svolta dalla amministrazioni italiane, da parte austriaca fu istituito il Kunstschutzgruppe, una unità speciale composta da storici dell’arte che doveva seguire l’esercito e occuparsi della tutela dei monumenti e delle opere d’arte, anche nei territori occupati del Friuli e del Veneto. Dopo la fine della guerra, in diversi testi Clemen, Dvorák e Tietze fra gli altri fecero il bilancio di quanto accaduto e dei danni subiti dai monumenti, all’interno di acceso un dibattito internazionale condizionato dalle reciproche accuse fra le nazioni belligranti.
The aim of the work is to provide a brief snapshot of the activities undertaken by
the Austrian authorities to protect the monuments during the First World War in those areas which
now form part of north-eastern Italy.
In 1913, Adria Ausstellung, the last great temporary theme park, was set up in Prater, as a
celebration of the coast and the Austrian Adriatic. Along the canal, full-scale reproductions of the
main monuments of Adriatic cities were constructed, such as Ca’ d’oro of Piran, the Palazzo dei
Rettori of Dubrovnik and the Praetorian Palace of Koper. It was the last celebration of the Austrian
Adriatic and the southern part of the Empire along with its monuments, which were, however, being
fought over by the various nationalities.
In the last few years, the Zentral-Kommission für Denkmalpflege was still actively making efforts to
protect the monuments in the coastal area through studies, inventories and restoration work. From
1915, the activities primarily focussed on the spasmodic documentation on the monuments in the
area affected by the war, with the publication by Planiscig of Denkmale der Kunst in den südlichen
Kriegsgebieten: Isonzo-Ebene, Istrien, Dalmatien, Südtirol in 1915 and, by the same author, with
Folnescis Bau- und Kunstdenkmale des Küstenlandes in 1916. In the periodicals of the Central
Commission, however, articles were published during the war which described the damage suffered
by the monuments, including with a contribution from Max Dvorák on Duino.
In addition, during the war, at the same time as the monuments were being protected by the Italian
authorities, Austria established the Kunstschutzgruppe, a special unit composed of art historians
tasked with following the army and protecting the monuments and works of art, including in the
occupied territories of Friuli and Veneto. After the end of the war, in various texts Clemen, Dvorák
and Tietze, amongst others, took stock of what had happened and of the damage suffered by the
monuments, as part of a lively international debate influenced by the reciprocal accusations between
the warring parties.
