Abstract
This study presents some documents relating to the foundation, during the 1950s, of two cultural institutes in Rome, one linked to the Federal Republic of Germany and the other to the German Democratic Republic. The first, the Deutsche Bibliothek, was created on the initiative of Dieter Sattler, cultural attaché at the FRG embassy in Rome. The second, the Thomas Mann Centre, was established on the proposal of the Italian Communist Party, in cooperation with the institutions of the GDR. The study highlights the differences in the process of establishing the two institutions, but also their similarities in the context of the Cold War.
