Abstract
Tarski’s 1933 paper on the concept of truth in formalized languages gave rise to an important field of study in contemporary analytic philosophy. De Florio’s book “La forma della verità” (Milano, Mimesis, 2013) is a comprehensive and precise introduction to Tarski’s thought about truth and to the most recent theories that directly derive from it. The book is divided into two parts: the former is dedicated to Tarski’s 1933 paper, to a significant objection raised by Hartry Field against the theory therein exposed, and to the defence of the claim that Tarski’ s conception of truth is a classical, correspondentist, one; the latter is about a family of theories of truth, known as ‘typed axiomatic theories’, that somehow conserve a tarskian imprint. In this second part the author also shows how the axiomatic approach highlights a serious difficulty for the deflationist theories of truth. De Florio’s book is highly recommended for those, student or professional philosophers, who want to get a profound understanding of a good deal of contemporary debate on truth in analytical philosophy.
