Abstract
In the second edition of the Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1694), John Locke introduced a theory of personal identity which opened a wide debate in the 18th century, between its critics and followers, that helped develop fruitful reflections on social psychology, the relationship between law and morality, and in the context of philosophical literature and the feminist thought.
