Abstract
The article represents a reflection in dialogue with, and based on, Deborah Puccio-Den's book Mafiacraft: An Ethnography of Deadly Silence. Specifically, the essay aims to highlight the signif-icance of "silence" and invisibility as a distinctive mode of existence for criminal or secret organi-zations. The issue of the power of organizations such as the mafia is, thus, linked to the problem of "nonexistent objects," a concept introduced in philosophy by authors such as Meinong.
