Abstract
The pamphlet BRIDGE STRUCTURES. Across Borders / Beyond Limits documents the educational exhibition held within the Master’s Degree Course in Architecture at the University of Trieste, as part of the Structural Analyses course coordinated by Chiara Bedon. At the core of this teaching experience lies the study and design of truss bridges, developed by student teams as a practical exercise aimed at integrating structural theory, material selection, sustainability criteria, and architectural vision.
Through small-scale physical models, built using simple and sustainable materials such as timber, students were able to translate theoretical concepts into tangible design proposals, tackling static constraints, principles of modularity, and the role of connections. The exhibition, presented in Gorizia in January 2025 during the Porte Aperte UNITS event, also invites reflection on the increasingly blurred boundary between technical form and architectural form, between engineering and the art of building.
Curated by Chiara Bedon and enriched by a critical contribution by Felice De Silva (University of Salerno), the pamphlet is part of the EUT series on architectural education and offers a reflection on structural design as a formative, experimental, and cultural practice.
