Abstract
Images are visual representations: what they display visually is relevant to understanding what they represent. Pictorial representations are images that visually represent visual aspects of other objects. Theories of pictorial representation investigate the nature of the mode of representation peculiar to such images. Some maintain that the nature of pictorial representation is explained by certain properties of the objects we call ‘pictorial representations’ (perspectival, resemblance, or structural ones); others argue that we should instead concentrate on the peculiarities of the visual experiences aroused by pictorial representations or on what cognitive abilities are required to grasp the content of pictorial representations. Sometimes different strategies are adopted within the same proposal.
