Abstract
The essay analyses the artistic and theatrical activity of some Russian intellectuals in Trieste in the first half of the 20th century. In particular, attention is focused on two areas: 1. the Jewish milieu, one of the most numerous and oldest in Italy, linked by a thousand threads with Jewish exiles from Eastern Europe, where the painter Jakov Žirmunskij, the architect Josif Kyacigh, and the engineer Nikolaj Ginzburg worked; 2. the stage of Teatro Verdi, an extraordinary centre for the dissemination of Central European culture, where numerous Russian musicians, singers and composers perform, and actress Tatiana Pavlova’s troupe debuts. Gabriele D’Annunzio writes enthusiastically of Pavlova’s tour and about the stage productions by Petr Šarov, Sergei Strenkovsky and Vladimir Nemirovič-Dančenko.
