Grande scala e potere: il paradosso della scala 1:1 nelle narrazioni letterarie di Carroll e Borges

Abstract
Del rigor de la ciencia by Jorge Luis Borges is among the most famous literary texts about cartography. The Argentine writer was certainly not the first to write about this topic: 50 years earlier Lewis Carroll, an author he highly esteemed, had in fact included a variety of maps in his books. One of these, like the one at the center of Borges’ story, is described as a 1:1 map, with very analogous purposes in the narrative structure. There are some observations supported by critical evidence that allow us to conclude that Borges knew, even as a scholar, Carroll’s 1:1 map. Surely, the most solid element in support of a hypothesis of direct origin, however, is the similarity in the description and the fate of both maps within the respective stories. This correspondence is very significant due to Borges’ propensity for citation and rewriting. In discussing these two authors, we want to highlight how the perfect representation of reality, through the concretization of an unattainable 1:1 scale map, remains a symbol of absolute domination over reality, strongly reaffirming the pervasiveness of cartographic representation as a metaphor of power.
Tra i testi letterari più celebri ad aver trattato di cartografia e delle implicazioni ad essa sottese, figura senza dubbio, Del rigor de la ciencia di Jorge Luis Borges. Lo scrittore argentino non è stato di certo il primo ad occuparsi dell’argomento: ben 50 anni prima Lewis Carroll, autore da lui profondamente stimato, aveva infatti inserito nei suoi testi alcune mappe. Una di queste, similmente a quella al centro del racconto di Borges, è descritta come una mappa 1:1, la quale ricopre finalità narrative molto simili. Vi sono alcune osservazioni sostenute da evidenze critiche che permettono di concludere che Borges conoscesse, anche in qualità di studioso, la mappa 1:1 di Carroll. Sicuramente, l’elemento più solido a sostegno di una ipotesi di origine diretta è però la similitudine nella descrizione delle sorti di entrambe le mappe all’interno dei rispettivi racconti. Corrispondenza che si fa ancora meno trascurabile prendendo in considerazione la propensione di Borges alla citazione e alla rielaborazione. Nel discutere di questi due autori, si vuole evidenziare come la perfetta raffigurazione della realtà, attraverso il concretizzarsi di un’irrealizzabile mappa in scala 1:1, rimanga simbolo di un dominio assoluto sul reale, riaffermando con forza la pervasività della rappresentazione cartografica come metafora di potere.
