Abstract
L’'Expositio Psalmorum' di Cassiodoro è un testo che offre un punto di osservazione interessante sulle tecniche esegetiche tardoantiche: esso si inquadra nella tradizione dell’esegesi biblica, ma presenta aspetti di continuità anche con la tradizione del commento letterario ai classici. Si tenterà di mostrare l’intreccio fecondo tra teoria e pratica dell’esegesi a partire dall’esame di alcune indicazioni programmatiche esposte nella 'Praefatio' (in particolare nel cap. 15), assumendo come filo conduttore gli 'schemata' retorici, particolarmente numerosi nell’'Expositio'. L’analisi della prassi esegetica cassiodorea relativamente alle figure (in particolar modo quelle di descrizione) si concentrerà sulla rifunzionalizzazione del materiale definitorio ereditato dalla tradizione e sul rapporto con le fonti. In particolare è oggetto di discussione il rapporto tra l’'Expositio Psalmorum' e l’anonima compilazione degli 'Schemata dianoeas' (RLM 71-77 Halm), oggetto di una recente rivalutazione nella letteratura critica. La questione delle fonti messe a frutto da Cassiodoro permette di entrare nell’ ‘officina’ di questo autore e di immaginare con un relativo grado di approssimazione alcuni dei libri presenti nella biblioteca di 'Vivarium'.
Cassiodorus’ 'Expositio Psalmorum' is a text that provides an interesting point of observation on exegetical techniques in late Antiquity. It is part of the tradition of biblical exegesis, but presents aspects of continuity also with the tradition of literary commentaries. We will attempt to demonstrate the fruitful intertwining between theory and practice of exegesis, starting with the examination of some programmatic statements exposed in the 'Praefatio' (chapter 15, in particular) and taking as a guiding thread the rhetorical figures, that are so widespread in the 'Expositio'. The analysis of Cassiodorus’ exegetical practice concerning rhetorical figures (especially those of description) will focus on the re-functionalisation of the definitions inherited from the tradition and on the sources from which Cassiodorus drew. One particular issue is the relationship between the 'Expositio Psalmorum' and the anonymous compilation of the 'Schemata dianoeas' (RLM 71-77 Halm), which was recently reappraised by critical literature. Finally, investigating the sources used by Cassiodoro, allows us to enter the author’s ‘workshop’ and to imagine, with a relative degree of approximation, some of the books in his library at 'Vivarium'.
