Abstract
What does the cultural approach offer to geography? In order to answer this question, we
have carried out two types of analyses: 1- we examined the 90 communications presented
duing the Conference of our Commission in Rio de Janeiro on 10-12 June 2003; 2- we
compared recents books on cultural geography : those of Mike Crang (1998) for Britain,
Giuliana Andreotti (1996-1997) and Adalberto Vallega (2003) for Italy, Boris Grésillon
(2002) for France and Don Mitchell (2000) for the United States. The conceptions I have
personally developed served as counterpoints in this analysis (Claval, 1995-2002).
