Abstract
The present essay explores Gorbachev’s role in the end of Marxism-Leninism in the Ussr. The last General Secretary of the Cpsu made a desperate attempt to revive Soviet ideology. According to him, the aim of perestroika was to re-establish the ideas of the October Revolution, not to overcome them. Gorbachev possessed a profound conviction in the historical mission of socialist humanism. Consequently, he exhibited a steadfast refusal to relinquish the myth of Lenin until the very end. This endeavour, as well as perestroika, ultimately proved unsuccessful due to the cultural limitations and political missteps of Gorbachev. The consequences were the dissolution of the Communist ideology, while at the same time polyphonic nationalist narratives emerged in the late Soviet Union.
