Abstract
Muovendo dagli studi che, anche in tempi recenti, hanno affrontato il tema del retroterra
filosofico del capitolo 15 del Peri hypseos, dedicato alla funzione della phantasia,
in sinergia con l'enargeia, nella generazione del sublime, questo lavoro si propone di
offrire argomenti a favore di una derivazione stoico-accademica dei due concetti, senza
per questo escludere l'eventualità che l'autore del trattato si rifaccia anche ad altre
fonti (come, ad esempio, la Poetica e la Retorica aristoteliche). Il lavoro prende le mosse
dalle due definizioni di phantasia presentate all'inizio del capitolo, con l'obiettivo di
mostrare come, al di là delle apparenze, esse non siano in contrasto e risultino entrambe
compatibili con l'uso stoico di questa nozione. Si cerca anche di sottolineare l'originalità
della posizione pseudolonginiana rispetto a quella di altri autori, come Quintiliano o i compilatori dei Progymnasmata, cui essa è stata spesso accomunata.
Chapter 15 of the treatise Peri hypseos is devoted to the topic of the relationship between
phantasia and enargeia in attaining the Sublime. Moving from studies which, even in recent
times, have addressed the issue of the philosophical background of the chapter, this paper
aims to provide arguments to support the view that the roots of Longinus’ use of the above
two notions may possibly be found in the Stoic-Academic debate. Nonetheless, the possibility
that the author of the treatise drew on other sources, such as Aristotle s Poetics or Rhetoric,
is not excluded. I focus on the two de!nitions of phantasia which are put forward at the
beginning of the chapter. My purpose is to show that, despite appearances, they are not at
odds. Furthermore, both of them !t into the stoic notion of phantasia. I also try to stress the
no"elty of Longinus’ approach to the topic, despite the fact that scholars have often mixed up
it with partially di$erent perspectives, such as the ones of Quintilian or the authors of the
Progymnasmata.
