La Carta degli ecosistemi naturali potenziali dell’Emilia-Romagna: strumento di conoscenza ed interpretazione del territorio

Abstract
EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and the Regulation on Nature Restoration request Italy to face important environmental challenges. In order to properly address the actions required to protect and restore nature, it is necessary to analyse the territory from a dynamic perspective. This involves comparing the current state with an ideal state, in which human activity would cease immediately, and ecosystems would be able to develop and reach their terminal climax phase. The aim of this study is to identify, characterise, and represent the potential natural ecosystems of Emilia-Romagna. The final product is the Map of Potential Natural Ecosystems, a medium-scale regional map (1:100,000) processed through overlay analysis in a GIS environment and representing homogeneous areas, identified according to their biotic and abiotic characteristics. The map is useful for the interpretation of the regional territory, identifying which ecosystems remain consistent with their potential state, and therefore in a natural condition, and which have been partially or completely overturned by anthropogenic action. In this way it represents a valid tool for territorial planning and for directing ecosystem conservation and restoration actions.
La Strategia europea e nazionale per la Biodiversità per il 2030 e il Regolamento Europeo sul ripristino della natura pongono l’Italia di fronte a importanti sfide ambientali. Per indirizzare correttamente le azioni di tutela e recupero della natura è necessario analizzare il territorio da un punto di vista dinamico, confrontando lo stato attuale con uno ideale. Quest’ultimo viene identificato con l’insieme degli ecosistemi che si svilupperebbero in un territorio se tutte le influenze antropiche cessassero immediatamente, raggiungendo subito la fase dinamica terminale. A questo scopo questo studio si propone di identificare, caratterizzare e rappresentare gli ecosistemi potenziali dell’Emilia Romagna. Il prodotto finale, la Carta degli Ecosistemi Naturali Potenziali, è una cartografia regionale a media scala (1:100.000), elaborata in ambiente GIS, che individua aree omogenee per caratteristiche biotiche e abiotiche attraverso l’overlay analysis. La carta così prodotta permette di valutare lo stato del territorio, identificando quali ecosistemi siano rimasti in condizioni di naturalità, coerenti con il loro stato potenziale, e quali siano stati invece parzialmente o completamente sovvertiti dall’azione antropica. In questo modo essa rappresenta uno strumento prezioso utile per la programmazione e pianificazione territoriale e per indirizzare azioni di conservazione e ripristino.
