Abstract
The paper offers a first draft of a history of the poetic (i.e. metrical and prosimetric) epistle in Latin literature of Late Antiquity, based on a catalogue of 195 texts from the 4th to 7th centuries CE, from Rufus Festus Avienius to Julian of Toledo. After an introduction to the topic (§1), an overview of the authors and texts examined (§2), and a description of the criteria for defining the corpus (§3), the paper focuses on the communicative purposes of the verse epistle (§4), and the aspects that characterise it as a ‘real’ form of written exchange within the socio-cultural elites in the last centuries of Roman civilisation (§5).
Il contributo presenta il primo abbozzo di una storia dell’epistola poetica (metrica e prosimetrica) nella letteratura latina della tarda antichità, basato su un catalogo di 195 testi dal IV al VII secolo, da Rufo Festo Avienio a Giuliano di Toledo. Dopo un’introduzione all’argomento (§1), una panoramica degli autori e dei testi presi in esame (§2) e una descrizione dei criteri di definizione del corpus (§3), l’articolo si sofferma sulle finalità comunicative dell’epistola in versi (§4) e sugli aspetti che la caratterizzano, al di là degli intenti letterari, come una ‘reale’ forma di corrispondenza in seno alle élites socio-culturali degli ultimi secoli della romanità (§5).
