Abstract
This article draws an overview of the origins, development, and maturation of the musical (though in many ways syncretic) phenomenon of rap, which has deeply acclimatized in Russia in the last two decades. What can be specifically defined as russky rėp has led to the rise of a great number of artists representing different subgenres and styles. Some have been able to establish specific bonds with their audience through codes, channels, and discourses that bring them close (with due distinctions) to the “bards” from the latter half of the 20th century. This is partly due to the renewed ostracism they face in today’s Russia, which at times compels them to operate within an illegal underground landscape.
