Abstract
The book by Carola Barbero, with the title Filosofia della letteratura (Philosophy of Literature), published by Carocci (2013), explores, moving especially (but not only) in the context of analytical philosophy, aesthetic and ethical issues connected with the polarity between philosophy and literature. If novels are fantastic constructions (and then somehow the result of a lie), which kind of right and of power could they have to act on the human life? How can be explained that strange process of empathy that drives us to suffer together with a protagonist (Werther in Goethe's novel, for instance) or to rejoice in happy events of literary fiction? Unraveling a series of queries, Carola Barbero on the one hand retraces the most significant stages of the “philosophy of literature” (from Aristotle onwards), and on the other hand gives a synoptic glance on the protagonists, bothmen and women, the questions and the current trends of the analytical aesthetological debate (Cavell, Danto, Goodman, Levinson, Nussbaum, Rorty). But there is something more: the pages of the Filosofia della letteratura, written by the authress with exemplary clarity, offer interesting (and unexpected ) insights both for scholars of analytical aesthetics and for those who are interested in literature or art in general. In this horizon a predilection is recognized by Barbero for the literary works that convey moral problematic values, and that, for this matter, contribute to a greater extent than other works to increase our knowledge and our understanding.
