Abstract
In January 459 in Lyon Sidonius declaims the panegyric for the emperor Majorian on the occasion of his adventus to the city. This is a less than conventional occasion: unlike in his panegyric for Avitus, Sidonius here combines praise of the emperor with the request of forgiveness and indulgence towards the city of Lyon. The main aim of the new emperor was the definitive destruction of Vandalic reign, in which he would engage in the African province; therefore, in addition to the prosopopoesis of Rome, who in this panegyric is triumphant and proud in her warlike appearance, Sidonius also produces a prosopopoesis of Africa who, with Virgilian reminiscences, deplores her Vandalic domination and asks for the advent of Majoran. The panegyric continues then with an eulogy of the deeds both prior and following the imperial election: in particular, the march across the Alps has as its referential model Hannibal’s crossing of the Alps as celebrated by Silius.
