Abstract
Memoirs and other first-hand accounts illustrate how during his university studies, Mikhail Gorbachev formed a lasting bond with Zdeněk Mlynář, future protagonist of the Prague Spring, promoter of Charter 77 and exile in the West. Drawing on recent evidence, including the documents left by Mlynář following his death, this essay revisits this stimulating human and political friendship and the ensuing dialogue about real socialism and the viability of its reform. Moreover, the essay sheds light on the attempts pioneered by Mlynář in the aftermath of 1989 aimed at helping Gorbachev to overcome the crucial challenges raised by the break-up of the Soviet bloc and the increasingly evident crisis of the Ussr itself.
