Abstract
Among the numerous heroines peopling Grace Paley’s fiction Faith looms largest. She appears as a character in seventeen stories, which form what can be called a short-story sequence. The basic thread running through the stories is Faith’s development as a character: being a fictional stand-in for the author herself, she follows a Bildungsroman pattern. Faith progresses from personal to social awareness and eventually develops into a writer. That is why the stories can also be read as a Künstlerroman. The purpose of this essay is to trace Faith’s development as a writer in five of the stories, which best exemplify her artistic evolution: 'Faith in a Tree', 'The Long-Distance Runner', 'The Story Hearer', 'Listening and Friends'.
