Abstract
In 2019, on the occasion of the 2200th anniversary of the founding of the Latin colony of Aquileia (181 BC), the Department of Cultural Heritage of the University of Padua conducted an archaeological excavation in correspondence of the republican city walls in the ex Comelli area, along the western side of the defensive perimeter M1, immediately south of the postern of the so-called “decumanus of Aratria Galla”. The wall structure, which has been the subject of recent in-depth studies in the field of building archaeology, has been investigated for a length of approximately 9 m and for its entire thickness (2.5 m), documenting its construction methods and structural features. The base portion, inserted within the foundation cut, is composed of two rows of rusticated ashlars in Istrian stone, while the elevation above is attested only by two surviving courses of bricks. Also of interest is the relationship between the walls, the nearby theatre and two long and mighty wall structures that run northwards parallel to the walls, starting from the theatre.
