Abstract
This paper is the second part (out of three) of a study on the ‘public’ excavations in Aquileia between 1815 and 1832, the first of which was published in Aquileia Nostra No. 90-91 (2019-2020). The first section of this article is a reconstruction of the administrative procedure by which excavations could be funded by the Austrian central government and carried out under the control of the Trieste provincial authorities. In 1814 the procedure received a decisive impulse from Count Franz Josef von Saurau (1760-1832), chairman of the Central Commission for the Organization of the Empire (Central Organisirungs Hof-Kommission), and Architect Pietro Nobile (1776-1854), Provisional Director of the Provincial Directorate of Factories (Provisorischer Oberingenieur der Landesbaudirektion) in Trieste. The second section focuses on the identification of the excavations’ sites. Based on the surviving documentation, the excavations’ sites are seven in all. The outcomes of four of them are examined in detail: the area ‘della colonna’ south of the Patriarchal Basilica (1); the eastern portion of the Chapter Square (2); the area southwest of the forum (3); the surroundings of the demolished suburban church of Saints Felix and Fortunatus (4). The three remaining sites, namely the central and southern portions of the Chapter Square (5), the Moschettini’s braida (6), and the little square before St. Anthony’s Chapel (7), will be examined in the third part of the paper.
