Abstract
Nell’arcipelago delle Canarie lo sviluppo di un turismo incentrato sul binomio sole-mare ha prodotto squilibri territoriali connessi al consumo di suolo, all’abbandono delle attività agricole e alla distribuzione della popolazione che, negli anni, si è spostata dalle aree rurali e interne verso le coste e le città. Gran Canaria manifesta i segni di un modello divenuto ormai insostenibile e ricerca nuove prospettive di sviluppo nella valorizzazione delle risorse ambientali e culturali presenti anche nelle aree rurali, soggette a spopolamento. Il contributo esamina le problematiche legate al modello Sol y Playa ed evidenzia alcune recenti iniziative di promozione turistica sostenibile del patrimonio naturalistico e culturale presente nell’isola.
In the Canary archipelago the development of a tourism focused on the sun-sea combination has produced territorial imbalances related to land consumption, abandonment of agricultural activities and the distribution of the population that, over the years, has moved from rural and internal areas towards the coasts and the cities. Gran Canaria shows the signs of a model that has become unsustainable and pursues new perspectives of development in the enhancement of environmental and cultural resources also present in rural areas, subject to depopulation. The aim of this paper is to examine the problems linked to the Sol y Playa model and to highlight some recent initiatives to promote sustainable tourism of the natural and cultural heritage on the island.
