Abstract
The research focuses on the analysis of pollutant emissions in the transportation and logistics sector, with particular reference to long supply chains, which include maritime and land transport (rail). By analyzing maritime and rail transport to and from the port of Trieste, the analysis examines a selection of routes connecting the port estimating the emissions attributed to the sea component, and the from the land side. The port of Trieste, in fact, is characterized, among Italian ports, as the main railway port, as well as the one with the highest international vocation, connecting the Far East with the markets of central and eastern Europe. In this context, an ad hoc carbon footprint estimator was developed for maritime transport, as well as a comparison between land modes, comparing different types of estimators already available online, as well as using specific simulations and methodologies. A geographical approach to the analysis is adopted in the analysis, reconstructing, from a cartographic point of view, the main routes and in making use of GIS and geovisualization platforms for analysis and representation.
