On the Translation of the ltalian Subjunctive into English
Stewart, Dominic
1995
Abstract
It would seem that even if the edifice of
the subjunctive may be said to be crumbling, the
foundations are manifestly still solid enough, above
all in written ltalian, to create difficulties for
ltalians required to translate from their own
language into another. This is especially true if the
target language is one such as English, where the
scarcity of recognizable forms of the subjunctive
often results in the translator having to come up
with some type of 'modulation' or 'transposition'. In the light of this state of affairs l propose a
brief survey of the principal difficulties, both of a
theoretical and practical nature, that one
encounters in translating the ltalian subjunctive
into English.
